Steps Leading to Actual Treatment

A radiation therapist uses a linear accelerator to administer each patients treatment. The accelerator uses high-energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells so they can't reproduce

Initial Consultation - The patient will meet with the radiation oncologist to discuss the area of treatment and number of treatments to be given. A review of the risks/benefits and side effects are discussed. During the consultation, the patient or responsible party signs a consent form.

Simulation - This is a "dress rehearsal" for the patient's actual therapy sessions. The simulator is an x-ray machine that can do everything the treatment machine does but it utilizes lower energy x-rays to obtain films. The simulator helps the doctor direct the radiation beam to a specific area so that damage to normal healthy tissue is kept to a minimum. Regular x-rays are taken to document each treatment area. Measurements are also taken to determine the distance, thickness and shape of the area for treatment. The radiation therapist draws the area on the patient's skin with a magic marker. Photographs are taken for treatment documentation and labeled in the patient's treatment chart. Small permanent freckle-like marks are tattooed during the simulation process so that all other marks drawn on the body can be washed off and the patient can shower as usual. After the simulation visit there is at least a 2-day break before the actual treatment begins. This time is used to plan and calculate the treatment course.

The accelerator is computer-controlled and is networked to other computers in order to monitor and accurately reproduce daily treatments for each patient.

Treatment - A linear accelerator is the treatment machine that uses very high-energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells so they can't reproduce. The therapist will use several methods for ensuring accurate delivery of the treatment, including laser lights, skin marks and machine displays.
