The care given to me by the therapists was excellent! The warmth and compassion shown to me by the entire office made my experience with the treatment a breeze! Thanks so much.
Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) is an advanced form of 3-D treatment that prevents unnecessary damage to healthy tissue by accurately focusing the most intense beams of radiation on the cancerous cells. In doing so, it improves coverage and control of tumors while also lessening patient side effects.
IMRT is used to treat tumors of the prostate, head and neck, as well as tumors near the spinal cord. With IMRT, the common dry mouth side effect is greatly reduced in head and neck cancer patients. For prostate cancer patients, higher radiation doses can be delivered which significantly increase the chances for complete recovery.
IMRT is an ideal treatment option for patients with tumors of the prostate, head and neck, or near the spinal cord. It is also used for thyroid, lung, liver, brain and gynecologic tumors, as well as lymphomas and sarcomas. As with any treatment, your doctor can help you choose the one best suited for your condition.
First, scanning procedures (CT, PET, MRI) are performed to determine the exact size, shape and location of your tumor. With this information, a computerized 3-D image of your tumor is created. Our team then plans your treatment based on this image and computerized dosage calculations. Modulated radiation beams from different directions are then directed to the tumor site to control coverage of the tumor and spare surrounding normal tissue.

One reason IMRT is so effective is because the treatment is specifically customized for you. That’s why we begin with a physical examination and medical history review.
Next, a CT scan of the tumor area is taken so your radiation oncologist can analyze the size and shape of the tumor. We then carefully design a treatment plan to determine the IMRT beams which will be used and their intensity map.
Lastly, a dry run of the treatment (simulation) is performed to ensure the computer-designed plan can be implemented. At this time, we may mark your skin with colored ink or place small permanent tattoos on your skin so we can properly position the equipment for the best possible treatment.
Because IMRT treatment is complex, patients typically undergo sessions five days a week for six to 10 weeks. Each session lasts 15 to 30 minutes.
At the beginning of each session, your therapist helps position you on the treatment table. If a special device was molded for you, it is put into place so you can comfortably lie still. Depending on your treatment plan, you may have to change positions during the session.
IMRT is a painless treatment but sometimes during treatment uncomfortable side effects develop. If you should become uncomfortable or experience any side effects during your session, the procedure can be stopped.
